All in Life

I began my studies at Helsinki University in 2008. Now, I’ll finally be getting my Master’s Degree diploma, marking the end of my university studies. During that time, I’ve seen a lot of changes happen to the system, and my own perception has developed and shifted accordingly. For the most part, I’ve been grateful to have the chance to study in Finland, but I’d be remiss not to speak out about some troubling developments.

Nirvana, the supposedly “last great rock band”, with a front man that publicly spoke of his depression, is an easy subject for being made into this icon of negativity and darkness. Yet I think that a lot of the fans of Cobain’s music find his work more multifaceted than it is generally given credit for.

You can’t predict it and you can’t evade it. I hear the slight falter in your voice when you've been thinking on your own and the smile that starts just a second too late. You try to hide it and from the surface I couldn't even notice. Maybe I don’t notice, years pass and still no one knows.

“Hey girlie, bring us another round, “ shouts the slightly intoxicated, plump older gentleman as he “affectionately” pats me on the thigh to set me on my way. I twist my face into what could be mistaken for a smile and briskly walk behind the counter to take my anger out on four innocent beer bottles.

For many, student organizations, parties, and *gasp* getting passing grades take up most of their precious time, especially in the early stages of student life. But then there's the type for whom it could very well be something like writing for BTSB that offers some of the most fulfilling endeavors for a university student.
