All in Chief Editor's Note
For our latest issue Elina composed a poem titled “These Words Are Not Mine”, Hanna takes a stab at Marvel films and Petteri provides an interesting commentary on Shakespeare’s “Timon of Athens”. Anthony gifts us with yet another fantastic short story and Teemu reflects on his recent trip to a longboard dancing competition. Jesper admits to being wrong about Game of Thrones and I interview content coordinator Kaisa Leino. On behalf of the whole editorial staff, I wish you enjoyable reading moments!
The world is a village now; social media connects us to every corner of the world, millennials work in multilingual environments and regularly holiday abroad. There's a huge generational gap when it comes to language.
Water evaporates, twirling and enveloping me as I look out over the snow-covered lakeshore: my skin prickly, breath foggy and limbs immobile in absolute relaxation--the post-sauna nirvana. Summer twilight--blue and purple hued--the city is asleep as I bike on cobblestones. I'm a little drunk on wine but mostly the light. Feel familiar? These are my memories of Finland. Sensations of home etched into my skin. Yet they are collective.
For me personally, BTSB’s new site is the fruition of my journey to a more healthy and productive view on ability. My hope is that this new platform works as a pedestal upon which the insightful, creative, and entertaining work of talented writers can be showcased with pride.
The solstice is but a few days hence, and night has taken its yearly respite. It's a thrilling and troubling time for night creatures such as myself. Some are born to night, which is its own kind of sweet delight, but what's a mid-bluish night without stars?
During a bout of textural appreciation, I first encountered reference to ASMR deep in the comments of a noise upload. ASMR is also noise, but not music. One ASMR video shows nothing more than two forks scratching a foam covered microphone. There’s also a low key, sleep inducing simulated kidnapping.
2016 was an evil year, or so I’ve been hearing. ...and yet I’m not sure I feel that 2016 was particularly bad.
Some Tuesdays in March you wake up a rainbow princess bag lady. On a wet November day you may be the ghost of a drowned snail. For every other person escaping into their costume, I’m willing to bet there’s one who’s reveling in the rare chance to dress as themself.
I'm happy to be taking the helm at Better Than Sliced Bread with such a great issue. While I've been an active contributor and editor at BTSB for the past three years, taking up the mantle of the Editor in Chief necessitates a shift in perspective.
